MHSPS Transfusion Laboratory Helps Transplant Team to Award

Melbourne Health Shared Pathology Service is pleased to congratulate our team in the Transfusion Laboratory at RMH.

On the 10th September, at the Victorian Public Health Awards, held in Albert Park, we shared the Minister’s Award as “Winner – Outstanding Achievement by a Team – ABO Incompatible Renal Transplantation Team - Melbourne Health”.

Dr Shlomo Cohney, Transplantation Nephrologist, accepted the Award as the leader and driver of this major transplantation initiative.  The “Team” included the renal transplant medical and nursing staff, the transplant surgeons and the Transfusion Laboratory team here.  Dr Chris Hogan was pleased to represent us there at the ceremony.

The RMH-based team achieved the first ABO incompatible renal transplant in the Southern Hemisphere, and have as a team now essentially set up this programme for Australia.  The programme is on-going here, with other hospitals now developing programmes, in the light of this experience.

Congratulations to Michael Haeusler and all the transfusion sccientists.
