The Heart Foundation awards project funding in the form of Grants-in-Aid to teams of researchers for a specific piece of research or a component of a larger project. A Grant-in-Aid can help establish a researcher’s independent career.  These awards can also provide an important source of funding to help researchers obtain the preliminary data and evidence required to be a contender for larger funding awards in future.

The Heart Foundation awards Grants-in-Aid to support biomedical, clinical or public health research relevant to cardiovascular disease and related disorders.  Research proposals are assessed according to relevance to cardiovascular disease or related disorders, scientific merit and the track record of the investigator(s).  Grants of up to two years duration will be awarded with a maximum funding value of $65,000 (exclusive of GST) per year.

Application procedure:
The Heart Foundation has partnered with the NHMRC to reduce the burden of the funding application process on researchers. Therefore, all applications MUST be made via the NHMRC RGMS which can be accessed at http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants/research-grants-management-system-rgms.

In addition, supplementary questions specific to the Heart Foundation must be provided directly to the Heart Foundation.  A pre-populated Heart Foundation Supplementary Questions application form is available HERE.  Applicants are asked to use this form instead of the form on the Heart Foundation website as it has details pre-loaded of the Administering Institution which will speed up the review and submission process.  It is very important that applicants consult the Grant-in-Aid Instructions regarding the application process given the NHMRC partnership.

Applicants need to:

* lodge their application via RGMS for certification by the Melbourne Health RAO (Research Administration Officer) by NO LATER THAN 7 MARCH 2012 to allow sufficient time for the RAO to review and submit the application

*  submit their Supplementary Questions application form to the RAO (email Louise Berns) by NO LATER THAN 7 MARCH 2012 to allow sufficient time to submit to the Heart Foundation

 ^  Please note that because the RAO will be on annual leave from 12-23 March and therefore it is imperative that the above Melbourne Health deadlines are observed.

Applications are now open for the 2012 round for funding commencing in 2013.

The purpose of the scheme is to provide support for outstanding health and medical researchers to undertake research that is of major importance in its field and of significant benefit to Australian health and medical research.

Career Development Fellowships are open to all early to mid-career researchers in Australia who have a sustained track record of significant output as demonstrated in peerreviewed literature, and a strong commitment to quality research outputs as judged relative to opportunity.

Career Development Fellowships offered by NHMRC are prestigious, highly competitive,
sought after awards for high performing researchers in the early to mid-stages of their
careers.

The proposed research must:

· be internationally competitive
· develop the applicant’s capacity for original independent research
· develop the applicant’s research leadership skills
· assist the applicant to establish themselves as an independent, self-directed health and medical researcher in a research program or as part of a research team.

PLEASE NOTE:
In 2012, it is anticipated that around 65 Career Development Fellows will be appointed. NHMRC has been concerned about the rapid growth in the number of applications in recent years, rising from 136 in 2002 to 428 in 2010 and 356 in 2011, the majority of which are not competitive against the top applicants.

To help researchers contemplating applying for a Career Development Fellowship, NHMRC provides the below information on a “typical” successful applicant, to guide researchers who are deciding whether to apply. This was derived from information provided on the successful application forms received by NHMRC in 2009. These “typical characteristics” must not be regarded as a “bar” above which applications will be successful, because the peer review panels take into account all the selection criteria, and there are marked differences between even the top ranked individuals each year. These are produced as a guide to applicants.

In 2009, successful applicants typically, in the past 5 years, had:

  • published 15 or more peer reviewed journal articles, with the peer review panel also taking into account first authorship (usually the majority of articles), and quality of the published work, and one or more review articles or book chapters;
  • presented at international meetings at least twice;
  • obtained research funding as a first named Chief Investigator in a competitive granting scheme;
  • international postdoctoral experience;
  • led their own (small) research group.

Please note that this is a guide only and there are many variations to this profile, depending on individual achievements.

The NHMRC’s Research Grants Management System (RGMS) must be used to access/enter your CV and Profile, and submit your Career Development Fellowship application.  Applicants who are not yet registered in RGMS should contact the Research Help Centre at help@nhmrc.gov.au for more information.

To find out more on how to apply for the Career Development Fellowship, go to  http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/grants/apply-funding/career-development-fellowships.

Applicants must advise Louise Berns in the Office for Research of their intention to apply and submit/finalise their RGMS application by no later than Monday 26 March 2012 to allow sufficient time for the review and certification of the application.

The NHMRC deadline for submission is Wednesday 28 March 2012.

ANZCA strongly supports research via its Anaesthesia and Pain Medicine Foundation, annually dedicating in excess of $600,000 to research, a figure that is growing each year.  This is achieved via an allocation of 10 per cent of all Fellows’ subscriptions and an allocation of income from ANZCA’s investment portfolio.

The award of a Project Grant is ANZCA’s main avenue for the support of projects in biomedical research in universities, medical schools, hospitals and other research institutions.  These schemes support work on problems that are capable of solution in a relatively short period of time.  ANZCA aims to supplement, complement and in some cases act as an alternative to NHMRC and NZHRC sources of funding.

ANZCA has opened its call for applications for its 2013 Research Grants scheme, offering the following awards:

* Project Grant (including Fellowship Grant)
* Novice Grant Simulation/Education Grant
* Academic Enhancement
* Grant Douglas Joseph Professorship (2013)

Click HERE to access the ANZCA research information webpage which provides information about - and access to the guidelines/application forms for - the above awards.

N.B. Applicants are expected to read the ANZCA Research Grant Policy before completing an application form.  Applicants are required to obtain a RegKey before submitting an application and this can be requested by emailing scollins@anzca.edu.au

Applicants are to forward a DRAFT of their application via email to Louise Berns in the Office for Research by NO LATER THAN MONDAY 26 MARCH 2012 for review.

The deadline for electronic submission of applications to ANZCA is Sunday 1 April 2012.

Mental health is one of the major health issues identified in the 2010-2012 NHMRC Strategic Plan with the stated aim to “support the development of evidence needed for effective preventative strategies, management, and treatment of mental illness, and services for chronic and complex mental health conditions” (NHMRC Strategic Plan 2010-2012).

NHMRC has, as outlined in the May 2011 budget, allocated $26.2 million over a five year period (a minimum of $5 million per year) to support research that delivers greater evidence-based policies and practices aiming to improve mental health care and provision of mental health services in Australia, and in particular, improvement of youth mental health in Australia.  The NHMRC Research Committee has committed this budget to both building research capacity and to a Targeted Call for Research (TCR) focusing on “prevention of, and early intervention in, mental illness in children and young people”.

Prevention of, and early intervention in, mental illness in children and young people

NHMRC is calling on the expertise of the mental health research community in the area of child and youth mental health – an area of international significance.  This TCR will provide up to $13 million of funding for the best researchers to build evidence and translate evidence into improved mental health practice.

This TCR does not preclude applications for mental health-related research projects through NHMRC’s normal competitive processes and schemes.
