New Chief Executive starts at Melbourne Health
Dr Gareth Goodier starts his new role as chief executive of Melbourne Health today, Monday 18 June 2012.
Dr Goodier is a qualified medical practitioner who has held chief executive equivalent positions for around 20 years both in Australia and the UK.
Melbourne Health Chair, Robert Doyle, said Dr Goodier brings a wealth of public healthcare experience to Melbourne Health.
“This is a new chapter for Melbourne Health as we welcome Dr Goodier to the top job as Chief Executive,” Mr Doyle said.
“I know that Dr Goodier is excited about his new role at Melbourne Health and taking this great organisation to the next level as we deliver on our vision – a passion for caring, achieving the extraordinary.
Prior to his appointment with Melbourne Health, Dr Goodier was the Chief Executive of the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in the United Kingdom. In this role he led an organisation with a budget exceeding £570 million and a staff of over 7,000. As a key centre for academic medicine and research, this included two hospitals – Addenbrooke’s Hospital and The Rosie.
During his time at Addenbrooke’s and the Rosie hospitals, Dr Goodier focused on clinical engagement, introducing a ‘balanced scorecard’ approach to performance management and helped to secure a significant increase in government funding for research. Addenbrooke’s is recognised as one of the leading clinical institutions in the UK.
Dr Goodier spent many years in Australia in leading roles at major hospitals and health services, including Royal Perth, Perth’s Women’s and Children’s and the East Metropolitan Health Service, the Kimberley Health Region in WA and the Peninsula and Torres Strait Regional Health Authority in far North Queensland.
Mr Doyle said both The Royal Melbourne Hospital and Addenbrooke’s have proud histories as major university teaching hospitals.
“Addenbrooke’s Hospital is linked to Cambridge University and The Royal Melbourne linked to Melbourne University. Both hospitals contribute significantly to the advancement of clinical research, education and excel in the delivery of world class patient care,” Mr Doyle said.
Melbourne Health’s Chief Executive, Dr Goodier, said he was excited to be starting his new role.
“Having spent a considerable portion of my chief executive experience in academic public hospitals, I am passionate about this work,” Dr Goodier said.
“I have tremendous regard for The Royal Melbourne Hospital – it was always ‘the’ hospital when I worked in Australia, and I believe there is enormous potential within the Parkville Precinct”.
