The power of music therapy at The Royal Melbourne Hospital has inspired a world-class chef to throw open the doors to his new restaurant in the sky.
One extraordinary night of food and entertainment is raising money to support the hospital’s music therapy program.
The evening marks the preview of Shannon Bennett’s new Vue de monde restaurant at the top of the Rialto.
Cancer patients participating in the RMH music therapy program express themselves through words and music through a unique, world renowned song writing method developed by senior music therapist Emma O’Brien.
As they tell their stories through songs, their stress and discomfort are reduced, and their quality of life is improved despite what is often gruelling treatment.
“Music therapy is so powerful. The songs I write with the patients become a way for them to cope with what’s happening to them. They are a way to reconnect with their loved ones. And can become their legacy. At the moment, this incredible service is only available to our cancer patients. Our hope is to expand this service beyond the cancer wards, to include all patients receiving treatment at our hospital,” Ms O’Brien said.
Shannon Bennett, whose restaurant is a Melbourne icon, is passionate about the hospital’s program and is throwing open his doors in support.
“In planning the restaurant at the Rialto, we were unsure about doing an opening event,” Shannon said.
“When we met Emma O’Brien and heard about her incredible work with the RMH music therapy program, I was inspired. Music feeds the soul – it is artistic, personal and comforting. Food can also nourish in this way so I see our collaboration with the hospital as a very natural one. It promises to be an incredible night – and a pretty good view too.” |
