Olympic Hotel raises money to support RMH cancer patients

31 October 2007

Staff from Preston’s Olympic Hotel raised $18,500 for The Royal Melbourne Hospital Cancer Support Group, through their annual charity trivia night.

Elena Liuzzi, from the Olympic Hotel said “Cancer has touched several Olympic Hotel staff members, so the team felt motivated to raise money to support cancer victims.

“The Royal Melbourne Hospital Cancer Support Group was chosen to receive the funds because the group immediately helps people who are suffering from cancer.

“Cancer research helps people who may suffer from cancer in the future, whereas the Cancer Support Group improves the lives of people who are suffering from cancer now.”

Professor Mark Rosenthal, Director of Oncology for The Royal Melbourne Hospital, said, “The funds will purchase a nice mix of essential equipment and items to increase patient comfort.

“Some of the items purchased include an automated blood pressure machine, a resuscitation pac, a platelet agitator, blanket warmers, and new furniture for the ward.”

Professor Rosenthal thanked the Cancer Support Group and Olympic Hotel staff at a ceremony at The Royal Melbourne Hospital on Wednesday 31 October.

He said “Our staff, and more importantly, our patients are grateful for the assistance of the Cancer Support Group. Their donation will tangibly improve the quality of care on our ward.”

The RMH Cancer Support Group was established in 2002 by former Royal Melbourne Hospital cancer patients. The group works to raise funds to support cancer patients at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
