WINNER: Incompatible Kidney Transplantation incorporating ABO Incompatible and Highly Sensitised Renal Transplantation Transplantation and Dialysis and Laboratory Haematology Team, Medicine and Surgery
Dr Shlomo Cohney (with award) and some of the multidisciplinary team pictured with Melbourne Health Chairman Mr Robert Doyle and Chief Executive Ms Linda Sorrell.
The Project
Over the past four years, Melbourne Health has achieved significant advances in kidney transplantation. In April 2004, the program began transplanting patients who had antibodies against their intended donor, resulting in 18 patients receiving transplants with 90 per cent of these being successful.
In December 2005, after two years of preparatory work, Melbourne Health introduced the first ABO incompatible kidney transplantation program in Australia, and has since transplanted 25 patients across the ABO blood group barrier with 100 per cent success rate. These two major advances have enabled us to offer kidney transplantation to patients who would have otherwise remained dialysis dependent for life.
The success of this program has relied heavily on a remarkable sense of collaboration between the transplantation and dialysis team and the Haematology Laboratory.
