 VMIA Research Governance Toolkit

In 2010, the VMIA launched the Research Governance Toolkit (RGT).  The RGT was developed to assist Victorian Public entities engaged in the conduct of clinical research with the establishment and ongoing management of research governance.  The RGT is intended to provide appropriate guidance and provision of essential tools in the form of templates, proformas and SOPs that will facilitate good research governance practice.

The RGT is underpinned and reliant on a number of VMIA documents which institutions and researchers should be familiar with:

  • VMIA Guidelines for Clinical Trials for Victorian Public Hospitals (2009)
  • VMIA First Time in Human Protocol (2007)
  • VMIA Clinical Trial Research Agreement Templates
  • VMIA 13 SOPs for GCP (2007)
  • Clinical Research Training Modules
    • Module 1 - National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research
    • Module 2 – Clinical Research Site SOPs
    • Module 3 – VMIA CTN Guidelines
    • Module 4 – ACHS Standards
    • Module 5 – The process to access TGA unapproved therapeutic goods
    • Module 6 – Privacy
    • Module 7 – Radiation

Details of VMIA’s tools for research governance research governance are available on the VMIA website.

Research Governance Toolkit Stage 2 - Educational Seminar Series and online training modules

In 2011, to consolidate the information delivered in the RGT handbook published in 2010, the VMIA partnered with Nucleus Network Limited to turn the toolkit into a series of dynamic, onsite educational seminars.

The Toolkit Part 1 is a comprehensive handbook which has templates for policies and procedures and checklists for research.  Much of the toolkit is designed to help research offices at research institutions develop their own policies and templates for managing and monitoring their research.  Many of MH's agreements and procedures are based on templates in the toolkit.

The greatest challenge of the toolkit was to ensure it had real and living application and benefit across institutions and for all people involved in the research endeavour, especially the researchers themselves.  This is where Research Governance Toolkit part 2 (RGT2) comes in.  The RGT2 is an educational Seminar Series which is being delivered across Victorian public hospitals, including at Melbourne Health, throughout 2011 FOR FREE.

For details of dates, times and topics of seminars at Melbourne Health, please click here.

Copies of the handouts for the various educational seminars are available from the Nucleus Network Education website.

The RGT2 educational seminar series is also being developed into a series of comprehensive online and ongoing training modules.  These should be available late in 2011.
