  RMH Graduate Nurses' Association

If you were part of our history be part of our future
Lady Superintendent Jane Bell and nurses, 1931
The Royal Melbourne Hospital Graduate Nurses’ Association was formed in 1917 to provide an avenue for nurses to maintain friendships and make new ones, and to promote the nursing education. Those aims remain the same today.

We invite you to join the RMH GNA as either a full member or as an associate member. A regular newsletter, meetings and social functions enable us to keep in touch with each other and with what is happening at the RMH.

Members are primarily graduates from a general nursing program at The Royal Melbourne Hospital or The Royal Melbourne and Associated Hospitals School of Nursing. In more recent times, we have extended our membership to include nurses who have contributed to the fabric of the RMH and can now become associate members.

Jane Bell Scholarship

The RMH Graduate Nurses’ Association awards the Jane Bell Scholarship to a RMH graduate biennially. The scholarship, which is named after the hospital's Lady Superintendent Jane Bell from 1910 to 1934, has been awarded since the 1960s.

We are committed to nursing education and these awards enable nurses to advance not only their personal nursing knowledge but to enhance the body of nursing knowledge which can impact upon the delivery of patient care.

Nursing Research Endowment

Since 2006, the RMH Graduate Nurses' Association has presented a biennial Nursing Research Endowment, given in the alternate year to the Jane Bell Scholarship. This supports a nursing research project within the hospital.

Publications and greeting cards

The RMH Graduate Nurses’ Association has published two books in recent years, which are both available for purchase:

  • Jane Bell OBE 1873-1959 by JA Williams & RD Goodman
  • Being There, Nursing at The Melbourne Hospital by Susan Sherson

A series of 10 blank greeting cards with historical photos of RMH life are also available, in packs of 10 for $20, or individually for $3.
