  Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery provides a comprehensive inpatient service for patients with neurosurgical diseases, with a clinical and referral service for patients with intracranial, spinal and peripheral nerve disorders requiring neurosurgical assessment and treatment.

Each year, the department treats over 5000 outpatients and is involved in more than 1200 operations at The Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The Department of Neurosurgery has active clinical and laboratory research programs that augment each of the clinical specialised programs undertaken by the Department alone and in conjunction with the Department of Neurology. Many clinical programs are involved with national and international clinical trials.

The specialised clinical programs include:

  • Brain Tumours
  • Cerebrovascular
  • Spinal Disorders
  • Neurotrauma
  • Pain Surgery
  • Neuro-endocrinology
  • Epilepsy and Functional
  • Peripheral Nerve

The Department has an active research and teaching program at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level for medical, nursing and allied health staff.

The Department works very closely with the Department of Neurology within The Royal Melbourne Hospital Neuroscience Centre.

Recent clinical initiatives

The Department has established a dedicated cerebrovascular clinic headed by Mr John Laidlaw. This clinic treats patients with complex cerebrovascular disorders in conjunction with members of the departments of Neurology (Dr Bernard Yan) and Neuroradiology (Professor Peter Mitchell). Dr Kate Drummond has established a neuro-oncology clinic, and this is also attended by members of the Department of Oncology including Professor Mark Rosenthal and Professor David Ashley. The clinic provides a holistic, unified approach to the treatment of patients with malignant brain tumours.
