Immunology is a generic discipline that impacts on many areas of medicine, and immune-based diagnostics and therapeutics have increasingly widespread applications. The department cares for inpatients and outpatients with chronic inflammatory, autoimmune, allergic and immune deficiency disorders, and supervises the diagnostic Clinical Immunology Laboratory. The department is accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia for physician training in clinical immunology and allergy, including laboratory-based training in immunology.

This service has expanded to become Victoria's most comprehensive adult service. A transition program was developed with the Royal Children's Hospital to ensure smooth and timely transfer of patients from paediatric to adult medicine.
Drug Allergy and Hypersensitivity
This service involves:
- Testing for general anaesthetic allergy in conjunction with the Department of Anaesthetics and Pain Management and the Victorian Consultative Council of Anaesthetic Mortality and Morbidity.
- Testing for delayed drug hypersensitivity, which is a common clinical problem. Patch testing was established on a regular basis in Ward 3 West.
Mastocytosis
An integrated service was established in conjunction with the Department of Dermatology to provide optimum care to people with this rare disorder.
Clinical Immunology Laboratory
The Clinical Immunology Laboratory provides a comprehensive autoimmune serology service and has expanded the range of RAST (RadioAllergoSorbent Test) assays for antibodies to allergens. |
