The Oral and Maxillofacial service (OMFS) at RMH is the largest and most comprehensive department in the specialty in Victoria. It is a tertiary referral centre for corrective jaw surgery, reconstructive jaw surgery, complex facial trauma, oral cancer and medical conditions requiring dental care within a major hospital setting.
The OMFS unit works closely with many allied disciplines including head and neck surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, oncology, trauma service and university based specialty dental departments.
Specialised clinics are also held for cleft and craniofacial related disorders.
In addition to routine elective and emergency surgery, the OMFS unit is heavily involved in continuing research. A long term and close relationship has developed between the RMH hospital OMFS unit and the research facilities available in the Parkville Precinct, including close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences, University of Melbourne.
The consultant team is heavily involved in continuing education at undergraduate and post graduate level.
