 Appointment Information

Why come to our clinic?

  • To find out more about your chances of developing a cancer
  • To find out what sort of check ups you may need to have with your own doctor and how often
  • To find out the best ways of managing your risk of cancer

How is an appointment made?

Doctors wishing to make a referral can print and send the form. People concerned about their own family history can call us directly to discuss an appointment. Once we receive a referral, a questionnaire is posted for collection of the individual's family history prior to the appointment.

Who will I see?

Genetic counsellors, medical geneticists, and medical specialists with expertise in breast, bowel and other types of cancer attend the clinic.

What about genetic testing?

Genetic testing is possible in some families and is discussed at the appointment.

What happens at the appointment?

The family history will be reviewed, and the possibility that an inherited form of cancer is present in the family will be discussed. Options for early detection and prevention will be discussed. The first appointment will take at least one hour. You may need more than one appointment.

What happens afterward?

Individuals attending the clinic and the referring doctor will receive detailed letters about the consultation, including recommendations for follow-up care. Medical care continues to be provided by the referring Doctors as the Centre does not provide medical management.

Individuals and their doctors can contact our staff to discuss any questions that arise after the appointment.
