OA Clinical Pathway Model of Care

OA Knowledge Base

The OA clinical pathway was developed by an multidisciplinary working group and funded by the first round National Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Conditions Improvement Grant Program (NAMSCIG). The pathway decision nodes and recommendations were developed using existing evidence based clinical practice guidelines and updating evidence for recent research evidence pertaining to interventions.

A full review of the evidence underpinning recommendations is available in:

Summary of literature review (pdf)

A summary of the evidence is available in Summary tables of evidence (pdf)

OA Clinical Pathway Model of Care

The OA pathway is designed to be used in any health care setting in which people with OA hip and knee seek support to manage their condition.

The OA pathway of care has been based around key decision nodes in the diagnosis, assessment and treatment of osteoarthritis of the hip and knee. Recommendations to support decision making have been made following comprehensive literature review and expert panel consensus where there is limited or conflicting peer reviewed literature evidence. This information can be found in Pathway Model of Care (pdf).

The pathway offers 'inputs' [information or tools to support decision making] and suggests 'outputs' [documentation processes to facilitate continuity of care and communication between health care professionals].

Strategies to enable successful Implementation and sustained effectiveness of pathway recommendations may differ between settings according to local contextual barriers and enablers.
