The Cardiology Department includes the Coronary Care and Step-down unit, the Cardiac Catheter laboratories, a cardiology ward, a cardiology day ward and the non-invasive and diagnostic service. The Chest Pain Unit (five beds) is run in conjunction with the Emergency Department. The department provides care to emergency and elective patients with heart disease including ischaemic heart disease, heart failure and valvular heart disease.
The Cardiothoracic surgery department is the largest in Victoria and second largest in Australia. The department provides consultative and operative services on an elective and emergency basis for patients requiring advanced cardiac and thoracic surgical care.
Ward 2 East
Ward 2 East is a 10-bed Day Ward with a Pre Admission Clinic. It services both the Cardiology and Cardiac/Thoracic Surgery Units. It is open Monday to Friday. A Clinical Nurse Educator supports the ward providing education services such as:
- Short Course Programs
- ACLS/BLS Assessments
- Study Days
- In-service Education
Ward 2 West
2 West is a 21-bed cardiothoracic surgery unit that provides a service to patients undergoing cardiac revascularisation for ischaemic heart disease valve replacement and repair and repair of congenital heart defects. The ward comprises 8 High Dependency beds and 14-monitored stepdown beds. 2 West is supported by a Clinical Nurse Educator who provides clinical education and support such as:
- Orientation Program
- In-service Education
- Graduate Nurse Program
- Clinical Development Program
Cardiac Care Unit and Ward 2B
Cardiac Care Unit is a 25-bed unit with two distinct cardiology areas: Coronary Care Unit and Interventional Cardiology ward 2B. It is a purpose built unit that provides a service to patients admitted with emergency and elective cardiac related problems. The main groups of patients admitted are patients with acute myocardial infaction, unstable angina, lethal arrhythmias, heart failure, interventional procedures (angioplasty and stenting, pacemaker and implantable cardiac defibrillator) and congenital heart disease.
Ward 2B is supported by two Clinical Nurse Educators who provide clinical education and support such as:
- Orientation Program
- In-service Education
- Short Course Program
- Graduate Nurse Program
- Clinical Development Program
- Postgraduate Studies
Cardiac Catheter Laboratories
The department provides a 24-hour acute coronary angioplasty service and carries out coronary angiography, angioplasty and stenting, electrophysiology, pacemaker and implantable defibrillator procedures. The Cardiac Catheter lab is supported by a Clinical Nurse Educator who provides clinical education and support such as:
