Pathology services are charged at rates detemined in the CMBS.   

Pathology Utilisation at Western Health

The amount paid by Western Health (per pathology request) is below average of all customers.  This was recognised in a recent independent review of the service**.	Pathology expenditure at Western Health accounts for 3.37% of the total budget ***.  This is lower than peer institutions in the greater Melbourne area.

National Trends

Commonwealth pathology funding has been consistant for years, despite increases in consumables and salaries.	The number of billable pathology items per service has increased only modestly, while large increases in billable items have occured in other areas of health.
