A/Prof Michael Gonzales graduated MB.BS from Monash University in 1970.  He commenced Anatomical Pathology training at the Western Hospital in 1980 and completed this at the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1984. He trained in neuropathology, first at the University of Melbourne in 1985 and then at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF) from 1986-1988 where he worked on prion diseases in the laboratory of Nobel laureate, Dr. Stanley Prusiner. He returned to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in 1988 as staff Anatomical Pathologist/Neuropathologist.  His major interest is the molecular biology of glial tumours of the central nervous system.  He was appointed as Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology, University of Melbourne in 2005.
