NorthWestern Mental Health (NWMH) has positions for first year psychiatry registrars commencing in February 2013. Click here to find out how to apply.
NWMH is the largest public mental health service in Victoria and offers psychiatry registrars a full range of psychiatry training experiences, including unique specialist rotations.
These training experiences are obtained across NWMH’s services and other affiliated organisations:
- Inner West Area Mental Health Service (AMHS) – The Royal Melbourne Hospital
- Mid West AMHS
- Northern AMHS
- North West AMHS
- Orygen Youth Health
- Aged Persons’ Mental Health Program
- Eating Disorders Program (based at The Royal Melbourne Hospital)
- Werribee Mercy Mental Health Program (including the Mother/Baby Unit)
- Royal Children’s Hospital Mental Health Service
- Forensicare
- Albert Road Clinic
- The Melbourne Clinic
- Two large private hospitals in inner Melbourne
- State-wide Neuropsychiatry Service
All trainees have a rotation at a rural mental health service.
This access to a variety of settings allows trainees to develop an understanding of different service models. Registrars work in multidisciplinary teams of highly committed and supportive clinicians. There are opportunities to develop expertise in caring for culturally and linguistically diverse consumers and their families, as well as disadvantaged groups.
The broad training program fulfils the mandatory RANZCP training requirements. This is achieved through a well-established teaching and support program, with senior consultant staff committed to exam preparation. In addition, the wide range of training opportunities allows trainees to pursue areas of special interest. Close links with the University of Melbourne’s Department of Psychiatry provides an avenue to expertise in psychiatric research, which is encouraged and supported throughout every stage of training.
Significantly, a high percentage of registrars choose to remain with NWMH, in clinical or research roles, after completing their Fellowship. This is a testament to the collegial environment at NWMH.

How to apply
To apply for psychiatry training with NorthWestern Mental Health, you need to:
- Hold a current, full medical registration in Australia or New Zealand.
- Apply to the Victorian Psychiatry Training Committee to become an RANZCP Trainee. Contact Dr Katinka Morton at Katinka.Morton@mh.org.au for an application pack.
- Complete the application for a psychiatry position at NorthWestern Mental Health. This is done by applying for a position with Melbourne Health. Select Specialty Registrars then Psychiatry Registrar First Year (trainees).
- Download the NorthWestern Mental Health’s Referee Assessment Form and send to three senior medical referees.
