Successful 2011 SET Applicants
RMH - training you for training!

Dr Jenny Huynh
Program: General Surgury
RMH… in 2009 as an HMO3
2009/10 rotations… general surgery, urology, Peter Mac, neurosurgery, trauma, cardiothoracic surgery and ICU.

When did you know you wanted to be a surgeon & what will being a surgeon mean to you?

Was interested in surgery as a medical student but was unsure what area of surgery. Once I started working, it confirmed that I was going down the surgical pathway rather than physician.

Being a surgeon will mean being able to do something I enjoy in the medical field. Making a difference to people's lives, but also expecting a busy lifestyle. I hope to be able to balance work and lifestyle.

Getting onto SET is tough, what did you do and to ensure you differentiated yourself from the rest of the applicants both in the years leading up to applying and during the application process?

I started doing research as a medical student. So by the time I applied, I had published a few papers. I did some charity and community work during high school and uni years. Practiced heaps before the interview and made sure I had a reasonable answer for possible questions. Asked the advice of senior colleagues.

What advise would you offer doctors considering a career in surgery?

Make sure surgery is what you really want to do. Its a tough lifestyle. Having a supportive partner and family helps. Work in several areas of surgery to see what kind of work it all involves before making a choice.

How many times did you apply to get onto the program?

I was lucky and got in on my first time. Being prepared for the interview was very helpful.

How has working at RMH helped you to get to where you are today?

RMH has a strong surgical aspect and is a competitive hospital. You are pushed to do well... which is useful for me. Colleagues helped me prepare for the interview and we practiced together. Having that competitiveness and motivation to do well was very beneficial in advancing myself in my career path.

What will 2011 hold for you?

Not sure what 2011 will hold... think it'll be tough but rewarding. Will probably be stressed but learning a lot. I'll take it as it comes then.
